About Our Honorees
The Al Wooten Jr. Youth Center is pleased to present our 26th annual Vision Award to Steven and Debra Oh. Steven and Debra are long-time supporters of educational initiatives including the Wooten Center. They have been faithful donors at the center for more than 10 years, including a $50,000 gift this year!
Financial gifts are wonderful and needed but it's not the only reason we chose Steven and Debra as our honorees. It's also because of the care and commitment they have shown.
The Ohs come faithfully to our golf and dinner fundraisers (see pics above), always asking about our kids' welfare, always buying our remaining auction items way above the asking price to ensure we made a profit (Steven's office is full of the items!). Their smiles and encouraging words have been an inspiration for our staff who missed the Ohs the few times when they could not make an event the past 10 years.
We lost about half of our income after the 2009 recession. Steven and Debra were among those who despite any challenges they may have faced continued to support the center when they heard we were close to shutting down. When we asked Steven to share his investment wisdom with our students he did so without question (see pics above). No brainer and unanimous vote to honor them this year!
Steven is a portfolio manager at PineBridge Investments. Debra is a photographer, former teacher and volunteer docent for the Los Angeles Audubon Ballona Wetlands Education Program. We love and appreciate them and are looking forward to celebrating the significant impact they have made for our youth.
About the Wooten Center
The Al Wooten Jr. Youth Center is a nonprofit youth center founded in 1990 by Myrtle Faye Rumph in honor of her son, killed in a drive-by shooting. The center opened with four boys who used to hang out on the corner in front of Mrs. Rumph's moving business. She rented the building next door for the center.
Today, the Wooten Center provides college readiness afterschool and summer programs for more than 350 students/year in grades 3-12 at our center at 91st and Western and other sites. Activities include homework assistance, assessments and tutoring, STEM classes, SAT-prep, piano, percussions, basketball and more.

Hosted by our board of directors, the Vision Awards Dinner is an annual recognition and fundraising event honoring Wooten supporters whose contributions made a significant impact at our youth center. We also present achievement awards to Wooten students for academic excellence and good citizenship.
