About the Honoree

The Wooten Center is pleased to present our 24th annual Vision Award to Thomas McCarthy, Co-President of McCarthy Cook & Co. Tom is a long-time donor at the center and is very passionate about helping youth. For almost a decade, Tom has served on the board of directors for Junior Achievement of South California. In addition, Tom uses JA curriculum and his background in real estate development to volunteer teaching Hancock Park Elementary students how to create sustainable communities.

Through his real estate development firm, Tom is currently helping us develop plans to improve and expand our facilities. We appreciate his volunteer and financial contributions building success for our students, providing a great role model in the fields of commercial real estate, green advocacy and more.

About the Wooten Center

The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center is a nonprofit youth center founded in 1990 by Myrtle Faye Rumph in honor of her son, killed in a drive-by shooting. The center opened with four boys who used to hang out on the corner in front of Mrs. Rumph's moving business. She rented the building next door for the center.

Today, the Wooten Center provides college readiness afterschool and summer programs for more than 300 students/year in grades 3-12 at our center at 91st and Western and other sites. Activities include homework assistance, assessments and tutoring, STEM classes, SAT-prep, piano, percussions, basketball and more.

Click here for a Wall Street Journal article on our founding and Mrs. Rumph, who passed away in 2015. For more information, visit www.wootencenter.org. Thank you for your support!

About the Dinner

Hosted by our board of directors, the Catch the Vision Awards Dinner is an annual event recognizing Wooten supporters whose contributions made a significant impact at our youth center. We also present achievement awards to Wooten students for academic excellence and good citizenship.

The Vision Awards Dinner is our largest annual fundraiser. Your support will help us continue our work supporting more than 300 youth this year in our free afterschool and low-cost summer programs preparing our students for higher achievement.

About the Theme

This year our dinner theme is “Building Success." It coincides with our 2017 Summer Fun Camp theme, "Arts and Architecture." Dinner guests will have an opportunity to help provide scholarships for students to attend our six-week summer camp featuring project-based lessons in art history and architectural design.

To help send kids to summer camp, go to www.wootencenter.org/vision2017rsvp.
